Her computer has an old-but-capable Intel i7 4790 processor, with HD4600 graphics. but she still floats around 20-40 FPS without any real consistency. I've tried to help her tweak graphics settings, installed Sodium (an alternative, faster renderer for Minecraft), reduced RAM utilization, etc. She has my old Radeon R9 290 video card, which is a fairly competent GPU for DirectX games that she plays, but it's very slow with OpenGL. I run a Minecraft server for my family with some mods on it, but my daughter's PC is at her mom's house, and she often complains about the game being slow and laggy, and I've for sure ruled this out server-side. AMD's older drivers for the Graphics Core Next architecture severely underperform on OpenGL apps, such that games like Minecraft are lucky if they can surpass 40-50 FPS, let alone staying stable around 60. I know the title might sound absurd, but hear me out.
